Schools and PTA Partner with Experience Education

Connecticut PTA announces a first time co-operation with an Omaha, Nebraska non-profit organization, "Experience Education".

In September 1999, the Connecticut PTA entered into an agreement with Experience Education, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit educational organization that has been providing services to education for over 32 years. Their primary Mission is to assist parents in developing skills they need to raise and protect their children. Toward this end, Connecticut PTA is providing PTA members with information about the aims, works and services of Families For Prevention®.

For the past five years in Trumbull, Connecticut, the PTA, with the approval of the school administration, has been reaching all second grade parents in their homes with this unique take-home video program on practical prevention and parenting principles. They recently adopted a new program for first grade parents entitled Families For Prevention® of Violence - De-Fusing Violence.

Mr. William Horner, President of Experience Education, will be in attendance at our centennial convention on May 5th and 6th. This will be an excellent opportunity to learn more about how the parents in your school district can receive the benefits of the Families For Prevention® program.

This first time ever Cooperative Program was developed by Connecticut PTA's Health and Welfare Commissioner, Peggy M. Perillie, with the advice and input of the National PTA. If you would like more information about the program, contact Peg by phone at (203) 377-1474.

Youth ChalleNGe program chooses Families for Prevention® nationwide

The United States National Guard Bureau is successfully demonstrating how to assist high-school dropouts to become successful, motivated young men and women through its Youth ChalleNGe program. The National Guard has the required infrastructure already in place to support a residency program where organization, planning, self-discipline, and leadership qualities are a common commodity among National Guard personnel.

One key element of the highly successful ChalleNGe curriculum is the teaching of "Life Coping Skills". One of the reasons Families For Prevention® was chosen for all ChalleNGe enrollees was that its video format allows its message of how to cope with alcohol and other drug use by children to reach the parents of enrollees and enrollees themselves in a non-threatening manner.

ChalleNGe staff are using Families For Prevention® in a variety of ways to meet core-curriculum objectives, and to reach parents and younger family members at home.
