Background

For over a decade, Experience Education, a non-profit 501 (c)(3) educational organization, has been developing a family friendly multi-media educational system designed to be used by parents/caregivers in their homes.  Millions of families have benefited from the Families For Prevention ®  program. The research has revealed long-term positive effects on families.

What makes Families For Prevention® stand out?

Parenting begins at the moment of birth and continues for a lifetime. The Families For Prevention ®  program begins at birth and continues with age-appropriate, consistent, positive parenting information through adolescence.  The interactive "up-close - personal - and private" approach of the kits with easy- to- understand messages that can be implemented in the family without any outside help makes Families For Prevention ®  unique.  This program turns the long history of rhetoric about the need for parenting education into the long-term reality of reaching families.

What does it cost?

Amortized costs average one dollar per family per use. Once purchased, the key to the cost-effectiveness of the materials is the re-cycling of the kits. The cost of reaching parents is so low that whole communities can implement the system.  Maintenance costs are pennies per family after installation of the Families For Prevention ®  system.

Which agency is best for distribution?

There is no "best" agency.  Families For Prevention ®  can be adapted to a wide variety of settings for the purpose of distribution to families.  It could be an elementary school (which can reach up to 95% of parents), a workplace, social service agency, housing complex, medical facility, juvenile court, or day care center. Each has particular benefits. Experience Education has designed delivery systems that can provide you with working models that allow for a "turn-key" project.

School-Based Classroom Unit

Each school-based "Unit" contains 30 videos of the same title, 5 audio tapes of the sound track, enough printed matter for use with 500 parents, and administrative supplies.  "Units" are used by schools to distribute the same materials to the parents of one classroom of students at a time. Units can be recycled through up to 15 classrooms a year.

The first three videos address the  problem of violence that surrounds children and how it's effects can be reduced.

The last three videos address factors that contribute to young children experimenting with tobacco, alcohol and other drugs.

"Family Inventory"
This "video quiz" provides essential information to parents.
Twenty questions address these facets of family life:
Temperament
Certain temperaments seem to be at higher risk of being violent and producing violence in others.
Establishing Discipline
Authoritative methods of discipline are contrasted with permissive and authoritarian styles.
Problem Feelings
Handling anger and identifying other problem feelings.
Conflict Resolution
Resolving conflict with other adults and children.
Bullies
Dealing with bullies and addressing bullying behavior in a child.
Domestic Violence
The full scope and descriptors of violence are presented.
Guns
The role of guns in violence toward children and access issues.
Violence in the Media
Minimizing children's exposure to violence in the media.

"De-Fusing Violence"

The primary objective of this video is to give parents practical tools for helping their children develop the life skills needed for dealing with the difficult  feelings that are usually at the root of violent behavior. The video uses vignettes depicting both parents and children in difficult situations involving uncomfortable feelings. Practical methods for role-modeling anger-management skills and coaching children to use these skills in the midst of difficult emotional situations are presented.
The CAT system of conflict resolution is taught: C - Calm down: A - Ask yourself what you really feel: and T - Talk about what happened and how it made you feel.

Keeping The Peace"
The third video in the violence series focuses on the advanced skills required for effective conflict resolution. Specific methods of conflict resolution are depicted including:
Compromise
Agreeing to disagree
Third party mediation
The principles of fair negotiation are also addressed. In a world where many adults believe "you deserve whatever you can negotiate," it is necessary to teach children to negotiate differences in ways that are non-violent. Critical values essential for raising non-violent children are targeted, such as empathy, respect, and fairness.

"Video Test"

"Video Test" consists of twenty Yes-No questions. After each question is presented, the parents/guardians are asked to mark their answers in the "Family Questionnaire," the Parent Brochure provided. After the parents/guardians respond to each question, the authors discuss the impact of the risk factor pinpointed by the question.
Scoring is done at the end of the video with "Yes" answers receiving varied numbers of points. The total score will give the parents/ guardians an immediate assessment of the risk (low, moderate, or high) that children in their family could become involved in tobacco, alcohol and/or other drug experimentation and use. Suggestions are made for further action based on the outcome of the scoring of the "Video Test." The value of the program is achieved when the parents/guardians view the video, discuss their answers and decide for themselves what course of action they may wish to take.

"Parenting Principles"
"Parenting Principles" provides families with solution oriented actions they can take to reduce the risk of their children engaging in destructive behavior of one kind or another. The five episodes dealing with common family situations relate to five basic principles of teaching family values.
-- What you do is often more important than what you say.
-- Teach your child to manage appropriate responsibilities
-- Use "teachable moments" to communicate clear messages to your children
-- Never assume that your child is immune to problems with alcohol and other drugs.
-- Trust your instincts!
This video helps parents/guardians realize that how they respond to everyday situations sends lasting messages to their children.

"Practical Prevention"
"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."
Research has shown that regular, structured family meetings are extremely effective in establishing and maintaining open communication and support within the family unit - a powerful tool for prevention!
Most families do not hold regular family meetings and  would most likely have a difficult time knowing how to begin and how to structure successful, meaningful, ongoing family meetings. This video provides  solid, practical information about establishing and maintaining family meetings. The "Parent Brochure" that accompanies the video summarizes the guidelines and ideas presented. The  family keeps this brochure for their own reference.
