Six videos developed and produced by Girls & Boys Town USA staff as the parenting techniques to be used for all resident family homes, this excellent material will increase parents' confidence in their ability to do a good job of parenting. 

Parents using these techniques report less problem behavior by their children, say they feel more effective as parents and are a lot less likely to use physical punishment.

The six videos, narrated by author Dr. Ray Burke, Girls & Boys Town USA, and Luis Valdez (Spanish version) target common areas of concern and misunderstanding about discipline and handling difficult situations parents face on a daily basis with their adolescent children.

Each school-based "Unit" contains:
    30 videos of the same title
    5 audio tapes of the sound track
    Printed matter for use with 500 parents
    Administrative supplies. 
"Units" are used by schools to distribute the same materials to the parents of one classroom of students at a time.

1 - Parents Are Teachers

 

Discusses why discipline should include teaching, how parents can communicate clearly with their children, and how to use positive and negative consequences with children to change their behavior. 

 

2 - Encouraging Positive Behavior

 

Shows how "catching children when they're being good" is one of the best ways to encourage more positive behavior, how to praise children effectively, and how to use charts and contracts to help children set and reach reasonable goals. 

 

3 - Preventing Misbehavior

 

Demonstrates how to prevent problems before they occur by teaching children what they need to know to be successful in new situations or in situations that have been troublesome for them in the past. 

 

4 - Correcting Problem Behaviors

 

Shows how to respond effectively to children's misbehavior and increase the likelihood that children will behave better in the future. 

 

5 - Handling Emotionally Intense Situations

 

Shows parents techniques they can use to stay calm and teach children self-control when a child throws temper tantrums, screams, hits, or defies them. 

 

6  - Helping Children Succeed in School

 

Demonstrates what can be done at home to help children do well in school:
How to use school notes, set homework schedule and help with homework.
How to work with teachers on school problems.
